Walter Ong! Thank you for the resurrection of Ong in “The Information.” For 15 years before I retired in 1998, I tried to teach 19th C literature following the assumptions in Ong (and other writers on word technology). I saw literature as a highly specialized subset of print word-processing technology–and now, with your book, I would take it the further step: it is a specialized subset of informatiion technology. I cannot tell you how elated I am to see your book move these ideas fforward–and, I would add, validate everything I was trying to do, howevr inadequately, for those 15 years. I met Ong once–he told me that print invented the unconscious, and that the printing press was a highly phallic mechanism. n S.J.
